Andy Burnham vowed his government would be a “circuit-breaker” and bring the “biggest changes” to Britain in 40 years.

The new prime minister delivered his first speech at Downing Street, in which he said he would bring “life’s essentials back under stronger public control” to make them more affordable for the public and end rough sleeping.

“I will soon go through that door behind me and issue my first instruction - to end rough sleeping in our country,” he said.

Concluding the address, he said: “I will give this my all, and I ask you all to pull with me. Let’s build a new national sense of unity, of common purpose and positivity.”

Mr Burnham became prime minister this lunchtime after “kissing hands” with King Charles – the private ceremony by which he accepted the invitation to form a government.

The Labour leader is expected to start appointing his cabinet later today.

He is also set to launch a policy blitz this week, including scrapping Sir Keir Starmer’s controversial digital ID scheme and reportedly opening the door to more oil and gas drilling in the North Sea.

Catholic leader welcomes Andy Burnham’s premiership

The leader of Catholics in England and Wales has assured Andy Burnham, a figure who has talked of how influential Catholic social teaching has been on his politics, of his prayers as he faces “many challenging issues”.

Mr Burnham, raised in the faith, has over the years described himself as “not particularly religious” but also spoken of the “values and the grounding” he felt his Catholic education gave him, having also sent his own children to Catholic school.

While the former mayor of Greater Manchester has been described as the first Catholic to enter Number 10 as prime minister, Church law dictates that this was actually Boris Johnson.

The Conservative leader was baptised in the faith and then confirmed as an Anglican as a teenager, but according to canon law once a person is validly baptised into the Catholic Church they remain so throughout their life, even if they stop practising or take up another religion.

Sir Tony Blair converted to Catholicism but not until after he had left Number 10, and the majority of British prime ministers over the years have been Anglican.

Speaking on the steps of Downing Street, new prime minister Andy Burnham said he is “acutely conscious” of being the “sixth person in the last ten years to walk up this street”.

The turnover of British prime ministers has been notably quicker since 2016, average at around just two years. The shortest serving was Liz Truss, at a record 49 days.

By comparison, the average term length for the six prime ministers prior to Theresa May, which ranges from James Callaghan to David Cameron, was nearly seven years.

Reflecting on this, Mr Burnham said: “It requires my generation of politicians to raise our game and rise to the new challenge.

“Britain needs to show the world that we can regain our stability once again, and that is our challenge to make politics work, to make it work better. I know people at home are fed up with politics.”

“And that’s why we will change politics, to make it more collaborative, more about problem solving than point scoring, and will take power out of here and carry it into every postcode in the land, so that they can do more, and in doing more, build a new economy where we put life’s essentials back under stronger public control to make them affordable to you again, reindustrialising Britain using public procurement to back British industry.”

It’s clear that Andy Burnham is trying to mark a clear change with Starmer. Speaking without a lectern, he is demonstrating that he is a more relaxed and personable politician.

His casual delivery, without notes or an autocue, was a marked difference from his predecessor.

And in the contents of his speech was a clear intention to show he is already getting on with delivery. End rough sleeping now. Cut the welfare bill to boost defence. More support for teens in school.

All of it was a clear sign to voters that he is not complacent, and he won’t make the same mistakes as Starmer.

He’s not yet walked through the door of No 10, but Andy Burnham has just made his first major policy pledge as Britain’s new prime minister.

The former mayor vowed to end homelessness as he delivered his first speech as prime minister on Downing Street.

“I will soon go through that door behind me and issue my first instruction - to end rough sleeping in our country,” he said.

“It’s about putting the right values and the right standards at the heart of government. I will put the care of people at the heart of everything I do. I will give this my all and I ask you all to pull with me.”

Analysis: Andy Burnham’s blunt message reflects on the harsh reality of British politics

Andy Burnham’s initial speech outside Downing Street reflects on the fact that he is the seventh prime minister in the UK since 2016.

“My generation has to raise its game,” he said. And insisted that his premiership will be “a circuit breaker” in the chaos and problems which have bedevilled British politics.

It is clear that despite not really outlining details of a plan he intends to make his agenda for government clear in the coming days.

That will begin with the appointment of his cabinet later today.

He announced that his “first instruction will be to end rough sleeping in our country.”

It is symbolic of a man whose analysis of the current situation is that the country has accepted problems for far too long.

He wants Britain “to start to believe again” and to “bring back hope”.

It is a bold statement from a man who less than a month ago was not even in parliament and has taken power in the most extraordinary way.

But as he warned his party on Friday, “this is Labour’s last chance” to get things right.

After crossing past No 10’s front door, Burnham and his wife Marie-France are greeted by Downing Street staff.

HURIWA, HEDA demand public accountability for recovered assets
Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured a final forfeiture order for N941,994,079.86 allegedly linked to a ghost worker fraud uncovered during investigations into the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted the order following an ex parte application filed by the ICPC on behalf of the Federal Government, seeking the forfeiture of the funds believed to be proceeds of unlawful activities.

The ruling followed an extensive investigation into payroll fraud that allegedly involved hundreds of fictitious public servants across several Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

As part of the legal process, the ICPC said it published the names of 910 suspected beneficiaries of the alleged fraud in Daily Trust and The Punch newspapers on March 18, 2026, inviting anyone with legitimate claims to the funds to come forward.

According to the commission, the investigation stemmed from a 2023 systems study that uncovered widespread irregularities in IPPIS and revealed numerous ghost workers embedded in government institutions’ payrolls.

Following the findings, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a comprehensive audit of the payroll platform, leading to a joint investigation by the ICPC and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) in April 2024.

The investigation reportedly uncovered 587 suspected ghost workers on the IPPIS platform.

The commission said the probe revealed that fictitious IPPIS identities had been created for non-existent personnel across multiple MDAs, with salaries allegedly paid over several years into bank accounts belonging to individuals and companies. In several instances, account names did not correspond with those of the purported employees, while some accounts allegedly received multiple salary payments simultaneously.

To preserve the suspected proceeds of crime, the ICPC placed Post No Debit (PND) restrictions on the identified accounts between August and November 2024, freezing funds amounting to N941.9 million.

MEANWHILE, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) and Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre) have called for greater transparency and public accountability in the management of assets recovered from corruption.

HURIWA noted the success of Nigeria’s anti-graft campaign should be measured not only by court-ordered forfeitures but also by how the recovered wealth benefits ordinary Nigerians.

It made the call yesterday, commending the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for securing a series of landmark court victories that led to the permanent forfeiture of billions of naira in assets linked to unlawful activities.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, the association said recent judicial decisions involving the forfeiture of over N4.6 billion worth of jewellery, N4.293 billion in luxury vehicles, cash recovered from businesswoman Aisha Achimugu; the Supreme Court’s restoration of the forfeiture of assets linked to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, the forfeiture of 52 luxury housing units in Lagos, and other recoveries had reinforced public confidence in the judiciary’s role in the fight against corruption.

HEDA, in its remarks, describes the judgment as a significant boost to Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign.

HEDA’s Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, commended the anti-graft agency for pursuing the case to its logical conclusion and lauded the judiciary for upholding the rule of law.

According to Suraju, the judgment demonstrates that anti-corruption institutions can achieve meaningful outcomes, whether with private or public persons, when investigations and prosecutions are conducted professionally and without undue interference.

Nigerians deserve more than an official conclusion in Habila’s death, contends PAT ONUKWULI

An unexplained death should unsettle any society that claims to value human life. It should matter whether the deceased was prominent or obscure, connected or ordinary, rich or poor. Mary Habila’s death is a matter of public concern, not because of her status, but because a young woman died in circumstances that remain unclear, and the state has a duty to establish what happened.

The matter remains deeply personal to her family, but it is no longer exclusively private. Nor can it be left to the discretion of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, or to those around him. Once a death is unexplained, responsibility shifts from private grief to public institutions. The task is not to manage reputations but to determine facts.

This is not an invitation to conjecture. It is a demand for evidence. Social media cannot establish a cause of death; political loyalty cannot settle disputed facts; sympathy cannot replace forensic inquiry. The question is not who controls the narrative, but whether the truth can emerge from an independent, competent and credible investigation.

Politics

Umahi should neither be condemned without proof nor cast as the principal victim of the controversy. Questions about the death do not establish guilt, yet they make him a person whose knowledge, conduct and environment may properly be examined. Scrutiny is not conviction, just as public office is not immunity.

No one should be more interested in a thorough investigation than Umahi himself. A rushed inquiry may ease immediate pressure, but it will not dispel enduring doubt. A rigorous process may be uncomfortable, but it offers the clearest path to the truth and, if the evidence supports it, to clearing his name.

The 1969 Chappaquiddick incident involving Senator Ted Kennedy remains instructive. Kennedy was not charged with murder or manslaughter, and a grand jury did not return an indictment. Yet the episode was never erased from public memory. It continued to shape assessments of his judgement, character and political ambition.

Politics

The lesson is not that law is secondary to perception. Rather, legal liability and public trust do not always align. A public official may avoid a criminal conviction yet remain burdened by unresolved questions. Poor crisis management and incomplete explanations can shape a political legacy long after proceedings have concluded.

That danger now confronts Umahi. If the investigation appears to be delayed, compromised, or incomplete, the controversy may follow him for the rest of his political life. It could become not merely an episode in his career but a defining element of his legacy. Reputations are shaped not only by achievements but also by doubts that are never convincingly resolved.

His response should be measured and practical. He should cooperate fully with investigators, support all lawful forensic procedures, and ensure that relevant records, personnel, and premises are available. He should preserve evidence, submit to questioning when required, and place the integrity of the process above the management of appearances.

Equally important is what he should not do. He should not dismiss every question as a political attack, permit supporters to intimidate journalists or witnesses, make premature claims of vindication, or allow his office to appear to influence investigators. Public confidence is preserved more by restraint than by public relations.

The Habila family must be treated with dignity. Its grief should not be exploited for political theatre, nor should its members be pressured into accepting a convenient explanation. Yet private wishes alone cannot determine the response to an unexplained death. Compassion for the bereaved and the duty to investigate are not competing obligations.

The controversy also raises broader questions about favouritism, patronage and cronyism. Umahi reportedly described Mary Habila as a daughter, suggesting a close relationship that may have afforded her unusual access. That does not prove wrongdoing, but it raises legitimate questions about whether proximity to power can influence employment, opportunities or treatment within public institutions.

Not every appointment involving personal familiarity is corrupt. Yet the government must not appear to operate through private relationships. Public institutions should reward competence over proximity, merit over connection, and citizenship over kinship. Even a lawful appointment can erode trust when the process appears closed or preferential.

These concerns extend beyond the circumstances of Mary Habila’s access to power. They leave two larger questions before the public. The first is forensic: how did she die, who was present, and what happened before and after her death? The second is institutional: can the state investigate a case involving powerful political interests with the same rigour it should apply to any other unexplained death?

Nigerians deserve more than an official conclusion. They deserve one that is scientifically grounded, procedurally sound, and free from political interference. The standard must remain the same for every unexplained death: evidence without prejudice, scrutiny without persecution, compassion without concealment, and accountability without spectacle.

Only such a process can provide meaningful answers to Mary Habila’s family, sustain public confidence, and allow David Umahi, should the evidence exonerate him, to emerge not merely legally cleared but also credibly vindicated. That is the test before the country, the test of public trust.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday evening charged other African countries to lend their voices to unanimously condemn the ongoing Afro-phobic attacks, also known as Xenophobia, in South Africa.

A united voice, according to him, will send a clear message to the Southern African country that such intolerance is absolutely not acceptable under any form.

Speaking in Freetown, Sierra Leone, during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, the President, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, informed the West African leaders that the Nigerian Government had “already evacuated over 1490 of its citizens from harm’s way in seven batches and is prepared to engage further on this matter.”

He also declared Nigeria’s support for the newly developed ECOWAS Compact for the Future of Regional Integration, noting that the document reinforces the region’s “shared commitment to rebuilding trust between citizens and public institutions, ensuring that regional integration remains resilient and relevant in the face of evolving geopolitical realities.”

Decrying the xenophobic attacks in South Africa, Tinubu said, “Nigeria condemns, in the strongest terms, the recent attacks on its citizens and other Africans in the Republic of South Africa. As already stated by His Excellency, the President of Ghana, ECOWAS should present a united voice in this condemnation and table the matter before the next session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.

“This would send a clear message that this type of intolerance is totally unacceptable under any guise. South Africa should be reminded that the freedom it currently enjoys is the result of the sacrifices and liberation efforts of African countries, including Nigeria.”

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to the ECOWAS Compact for the Future of Regional Integration, noting that while the document represents a significant milestone in the regional integration journey, it is also a reflection of ECOWAS Member States’ collective resolve to renew the ideals of the regional body.

The Compact, the President noted, will “strengthen regional solidarity, and build a more resilient, prosperous, peaceful, and people-centred Community capable of meeting the aspirations of its over 400 million citizens.”

Tinubu also urged the West African leaders to intensify collective action against insecurity and unconstitutional governance as reflected in the Compact.

According to him: “As the largest economy and one of the key founding members of our Regional Economic Community, Nigeria remains steadfast in its historic responsibility to continue the promotion of regional unity, peace, economic integration, and democratic governance.

“Nigeria will continue to work closely with Member States and all stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of the Compact and the realisation of its six strategic pillars.”

On political stability, the President charged ECOWAS to continue promoting constitutional government, the rule of law and compliance with the regional Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

“On peace, security, and democratic governance, Nigeria reaffirms that sustainable development cannot be achieved in an environment of insecurity and instability. Nigeria remains firmly committed to the principles enshrined in the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and other regional frameworks.

“Nigeria supports the Compact’s commitment to constitutional governance, the rule of law, respect for human rights, and zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes of government,” he declared.

Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to the setting up of the Counter Terrorism Force, and strengthening of the ECOWAS Standby Force, stating that it will “enhance counter-terrorism cooperation, intelligence sharing, joint security operations, and preventive diplomacy to safeguard peace and stability across our region.”

He also restated the nation’s commitment to initiatives that eliminates “trade barriers, improve cross-border infrastructure, facilitate the free movement of persons, goods, and services, and create an enabling environment for businesses, entrepreneurs, and investors to thrive across West Africa.”

The President underscored what he described as the central role of technology in shaping the future of nations, expressing Nigeria’s satisfaction with the Compact’s emphasis on science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation.

According to him, the establishment of a Digital Single Market, regional frameworks on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity cooperation, digital infrastructure, and innovation ecosystems will unlock new “opportunities for economic diversification, entrepreneurship, education, financial inclusion, and job creation, particularly for young people.

At the same time, he said the digital single market will accelerate inclusive growth and positioning West Africa as a competitive player in the global digital economy.

Tinubu also reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to “advancing gender equality, expanding opportunities for women in leadership and decision-making, investing in education and skills development, supporting youth entrepreneurship, and ensuring that young people are active participants in shaping the future of West Africa.”

Earlier, President of Sierra Leone and Chairman of ECOWAS, Julius Maada Bio, explained that the meeting was organised to reflect on the future of ECOWAS and take stock on its journey so far.

Bio said ECOWAS Vision 2050 offers a compelling destination towards a peaceful, integrated, and prosperous West Africa, founded on democratic governance and driven by the energy and creativity of its people.

He, however, noted that the pace of global transformation requires the community to examine its progress in honesty, and also challenge the wronghead assumptions beyond necessary and adapt methods to new realities.

Bio stated that West Africa must enter a new era with confidence, strategic clarity, and stronger determination to shape its own destiny.

“We should work on partnerships that expand our opportunities, while remaining firmly anchored in our own interests and barriers.

“Dependency narrows the very freedom that challenging partnership is meant to strengthen, and in this changing international environment, regional integration is a strategic necessity.

“It ensures a responsibility that demands foresight, preparation, and collective action. It is shaped by the crisis we build, the capabilities that we build, and the reason we confront before they become crises,” he noted.

The ECOWAS Chairman said climate shocks are placing increasing pressure on national budgets, while countries far beyond the region’s borders continue to disrupt supplies of food, fuel, and fertilizer within our region.”

On her part, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Hajiya Amina Mohammed, declared UN’s support for all the initiatives of ECOWAS and countries of the West African mission and the Sahel towards fighting terrorism in the region.

She stressed that the international global body has an obligation to support the region combat terrorism and all forms of crime against humanity.

“The United Nations Security Council must clearly hear the voice of Africa and stand behind the solutions that Africa offers. We have seen what it looks like in this region. There is new momentum and dialogue across political divides and across geography,” she said.

Also speaking, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, reiterated the resolved of the regional body to strengthen governance and accountability across institutions and deepen policy coordination among member states.

He said the commission reintroduced democratic governance and electoral support mechanisms while strengthening regional responses to security and humanitarian challenges.

“We enhance our cooperation in combating terrorism, climate extremism, organised crime, and other transnational threats that continue to undermine stability and development.”

Highpoint of the meeting was the signing of the Intergovernmental Governmental Agreement (IGA) for the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP) project.

The United Nations (UN) has warned that terrorist groups operating in northern Nigeria and across the West African and Sahel region are becoming increasingly sophisticated, deploying drones, advanced communications technology and cryptocurrencies to strengthen their operations.

The warning came during a briefing to the United Nations Security Council by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Leonardo Simão, who presented the Secretary-General’s latest report on developments in the region covering the period from November 29, 2025 to June 30, 2026.

The report was presented as the Security Council reviewed the security, political and humanitarian situation in West Africa and the Sahel, a region battling persistent terrorist violence, political transitions and growing humanitarian needs.
It also comes against the backdrop of the council’s recent decision to extend the mandate of UNOWAS until January 31, 2029, reflecting continued international support for preventive diplomacy in the region.
Addressing the council, Simão said terrorist organisations were evolving rapidly, making the threat more difficult to contain. “Armed groups are increasingly using drones, sophisticated communications and cryptocurrencies while coordinating operations across borders,” he said.

According to him, the activities of the groups have become intertwined with transnational organised crime and are aimed at consolidating territorial and economic control while weakening public confidence in state institutions and damaging social cohesion.
The UN briefing came just weeks after the US disclosed what it described as the largest seizure of terrorist equipment in Nigeria since the September 11, 2001 attacks. According to Dr. Sebastian Gorka, who serves as the United States Deputy Assistant and Senior Director for Counterterrorism, a joint counterterrorism operation with Nigerian forces led to the recovery of a vast cache of electronic devices and other operational materials from jihadist groups.

He stated that it was so extensive that an additional aircraft was required to transport the confiscated equipment for forensic analysis by American intelligence agencies. The operation, he said, also resulted in the killing of 199 jihadists during a single raid.
But Simão noted that Nigeria, Niger and Burkina Faso have continued to suffer terrorist attacks, kidnappings and significant civilian casualties.

Simão told the council that ‘the human cost of the violence is devastating,’ disclosing that about 6.8 million people had been displaced across the region, while another 1.28 million had become refugees or asylum seekers.
According to him, humanitarian access remained severely constrained by insecurity and funding shortages, leaving women, children and young people to bear the greatest burden of the crisis.

“The problem is acute, especially in the central Sahel and northern Nigeria…Their actions intersect with transnational organised crime, and are aimed at consolidating territorial and economic control, erosion of public confidence in State authority, with serious damage to social cohesion,” he warned.

Despite the deteriorating security situation, the UN pointed to signs of improving regional cooperation, citing the reopening of the Kamba border crossing between Nigeria and Niger as one of the practical outcomes of renewed diplomatic engagement.
He also referenced progress by the Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission in implementing the 2002 International Court of Justice (ICJ) judgment on the countries’ land and maritime boundary, describing it as evidence that dialogue could resolve longstanding disputes. “These are some examples of regional efforts towards dialogue,” he emphasised.
The UN stressed that military operations alone would not eliminate terrorism, urging governments and the international community to tackle the underlying drivers of violent extremism.

“Fighting poverty and vulnerability must therefore remain a common objective in the broader fight against terrorism,” he said.
“Regional actors are working hard to find solutions,” he added, highlighting that ECOWAS has renewed efforts to operationalise its standby force, but at a lower dimension than needed, due to financial limitations.

Besides, the 15 council members broadly agreed that terrorism in West Africa and the Sahel was becoming more sophisticated and increasingly linked with organised crime and illicit trafficking, underscoring the need for stronger regional cooperation.
Several delegations, including those from the US, China , Russia, UK, France, Liberia, Pakistan, Burkina Faso, among others, argued that security responses must be complemented by investments in governance, education, employment, humanitarian assistance and economic development to address the root causes of instability.

“Council members broadly agreed that increasingly sophisticated terrorist networks, linked to organised crime and drug trafficking, threaten regional stability. Speakers stressed that military action alone cannot defeat extremism and called for governance reforms, development, education, job creation and humanitarian support to address root causes.

“Despite worsening insecurity, regional diplomacy is gaining momentum, with renewed cooperation among Sahel States and members of the Economic Community of West African States. The council signaled strong support for UNOWAS and preventive diplomacy as essential tools for confronting both immediate security threats and the region’s long-term challenges,” a note from the meeting stated.

Besides, participants at the meeting agreed that drug trafficking, production and consumption are compounding insecurity, particularly in coastal countries. “Youth are the principal victims,” an unnamed Liberian representative said, noting reports that terrorist combatants are also using drugs.
Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation, Anna Evstigneeva, recalling that the council has characterised some attacks as terrorist acts, pointed to the role of “external forces” supporting their activities.

FILE: Childbirth

Nothing exposes the deepening crisis in Nigeria’s healthcare system more painfully than the soaring cost of childbirth. Across the country, couples who should be celebrating the arrival of a new baby are instead plunged into financial distress.

Even in public hospitals, where affordable healthcare ought to be guaranteed, routine vaginal deliveries now cost as much as N800,000. Caesarean sections frequently exceed N1 million and, in some cases, approach N2 million. For countless families, childbirth has become an unaffordable luxury. This is terrifying.

A Vanguard report dated July 3 detailed the financial ordeal of expectant parents in public hospitals. Its investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of multiple charges and hidden fees.

Patients are compelled to purchase surgical gloves, disinfectants, detergents and numerous consumables, some of which are never used. Tests are often conducted in private laboratories owned by consultants, while medications are sourced from pharmacies linked to hospital personnel.

Such practices amount to racketeering that preys on vulnerable families at one of the most delicate moments of their lives.

As such, Nigeria is one of the most dangerous places in the world to become pregnant or give birth.

According to the United Nations and global health agencies, about one in every 100 Nigerian women dies during childbirth or within days of giving birth.

The country’s maternal mortality ratio stands at approximately 1,047 deaths per 100,000 live births, the fourth highest globally.

In contrast, the World Population Review said Belarus, Poland, and Norway report fewer than two deaths per 100,000 live births.

As childbirth becomes increasingly unaffordable, many pregnant women will inevitably seek cheaper alternatives through traditional birth attendants, unlicensed maternity homes and other unskilled providers.

Many will not survive. What begins as an attempt to save money may end in preventable tragedy for both mother and child.

The Federal Government launched the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative on November 7, 2024, to expand access to Caesarean sections in public hospitals.

Health Minister Muhammad Pate rightly declared: “No woman should lose her life simply because she can’t afford a C-section.”

Unfortunately, implementation has fallen far short of the promise.

To access the programme, the poor and vulnerable must present their National Identification Number and prove their indigence. For many pregnant women facing medical emergencies, navigating such bureaucracy is itself an obstacle.

More troubling are reports that even major federal teaching hospitals have struggled to implement the initiative effectively, with many health workers and expectant mothers unaware that such a policy exists.

A policy that exists only on paper cannot save lives.

Nigeria must therefore go beyond subsidising Caesarean sections. The entire cost structure of maternal healthcare requires urgent review. Pregnancy should never become an avenue for profiteering. Public hospitals exist to provide care, not to enrich a network of consultants, contractors and middlemen through inflated bills and unnecessary purchases.

The country’s Primary Health Centres should be equipped and staffed by competent midwives and nurses to safely manage uncomplicated pregnancies. This will reduce congestion at tertiary hospitals and bring quality maternal care closer to communities.

The worsening exodus of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals has already weakened the health system. Rising childbirth costs only compound the crisis by making quality care inaccessible to those who need it most.

The Central Bank of Nigeria said Nigerians spent $550 million on medical tourism in the first nine months of 2025, higher than the $465 million or 17.96 per cent more than the same period in 2024. This is money that helps the economy of other countries. So, Nigeria should reverse this trend.

Under former Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, the Abiye (Safe Motherhood) Initiative transformed maternal healthcare through free maternal services, strengthened primary healthcare, with dedicated health workers monitoring pregnant women.

The initiative improved referral systems and dramatically reduced maternal deaths in the state, becoming an internationally recognised model for safe motherhood.

The Federal Government should study and adapt the Abiye Initiative and activate it on a national scale.

Nigerians must also confront the economic realities surrounding family size. The country’s fertility rate averages about 4.8 children per woman, though it is considerably lower in southern urban centres such as Lagos and significantly higher in parts of northern Nigeria.

Every family has the right to determine its size, but prospective parents must equally weigh their financial capacity to provide quality healthcare, education and decent living standards for every child they bring into the world.

The soaring cost of childbirth also carries wider social implications. Young Nigerians are already cold to marriage because of unemployment, inflation and economic uncertainty. Turning childbirth into another crushing financial burden will only discourage them more.

No woman should fear death because she is pregnant, and no father should face financial ruin simply because his wife is giving birth.

Childbirth should be a moment of joy, not anxiety. It should mark the beginning of life, not the prospect of death.

Nigeria must urgently strengthen its primary healthcare system, eliminate exploitative billing in public hospitals, provide extensive maternal health subsidies, and faithfully implement programmes designed to save mothers’ lives.

Childbirth need not be a death sentence.

On 15 July 2026, Chief Aremo Olusegun (Segun) Osoba turned 87. For many Nigerians, the occasion is an opportunity to celebrate an accomplished journalist, former Governor of Ogun State, elder statesman and one of the country’s most respected public figures. For those of us in the Nigerian Guild of Editors, however, it is also a moment to celebrate something even more enduring—a man who, despite attaining the highest levels of public service, never severed his bond with the profession that made him. If I were to describe him in one sentence, I would simply say: Aremo Segun Osoba is an editor who never left the Guild.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors has produced many distinguished professionals who went on to become publishers, media proprietors, ambassadors, ministers and elder statesmen. As they assumed greater responsibilities, many naturally became less visible in the day-to-day affairs of the profession that shaped them. Aremo Osoba chose a different path. Though he rose to become Governor of Ogun State and one of Nigeria’s foremost political leaders, he remained deeply rooted in journalism and steadfastly committed to the Guild. He stayed close to his colleagues, continued to identify with the profession and remained ever willing to contribute to its growth and prestige.

There are journalists who become editors. There are editors who become media executives. There are media executives who venture into politics. And there are politicians who, after attaining high office, gradually distance themselves from their professional roots. Aremo Osoba belongs to that rare class of Nigerians who defied this pattern. The newsroom never left him and, more importantly, neither did the Guild.

My association with Aremo Osoba spans several decades, but it became much closer following my election as General Secretary of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in 2001, when the late Mrs. Remi Oyo, of blessed memory, was serving as President of the Guild. Those were defining years in the life of our organisation. Throughout that period, Aremo Osoba remained one of the Guild’s dependable pillars. He was always available with wise counsel, sound judgment and quiet encouragement whenever the leadership sought his advice.

What impressed me most was that he never sought recognition for his contributions. He did not need an office to exert influence. His authority came from experience, credibility and the respect he had earned over many decades of distinguished service to journalism. He believed that the Guild was bigger than any individual and that every editor had a responsibility to protect its integrity and strengthen its unity.

As our relationship grew, I came to know him beyond the public image. He treated me with warmth, affection and genuine friendship. He never made me feel that I was dealing with a former governor or a national political figure. Rather, he related to me as a colleague and a member of one professional family. His humility remains one of the qualities I admire most about him.

At numerous Nigerian Guild of Editors conferences, the Annual All Nigerian Editors Conference (ANEC)—initiated in 2004 during my tenure as President of the Guild—lectures, seminars, award ceremonies and other media engagements, we regularly met and shared memorable moments. Those occasions provided opportunities for meaningful conversations on journalism, governance, leadership and the future of Nigeria. Listening to him was like attending a master class delivered by someone who had experienced virtually every aspect of the media profession and public service.

Beyond the formal sessions, the social moments at Guild gatherings also remain memorable. Many colleagues will fondly recall his graceful dancing steps during gala nights, induction ceremonies for new members and Fellows, and other informal interactions. These lighter moments revealed another dimension of his personality—his warmth, humility and ability to connect effortlessly with colleagues across generations of the journalism profession.

One remarkable characteristic of Aremo Osoba is his consistency. Public office never changed him. Political prominence never detached him from journalism. Even after serving as Governor of Ogun State and becoming one of Nigeria’s leading political figures, he remained approachable, accessible and genuinely interested in the welfare of journalists and the progress of the Nigerian Guild of Editors.

It is, therefore, not surprising that he hardly misses major and not even so major media events. Whether it is the Nigerian Guild of Editors’ Annual National Convention, the All Nigeria Editors’ Conference, a memorial lecture, a book presentation, an anniversary celebration or any significant gathering of media professionals, Aremo Osoba is usually there. His attendance is never a mere formality. It is a demonstration of his enduring loyalty to journalism and to the Guild that has remained his professional home.

His presence at such events sends a powerful message to younger journalists. It tells them that journalism is not merely a stepping stone to other careers but a lifelong calling deserving of commitment and pride. It reminds them that professional relationships should be nurtured and sustained, regardless of whatever heights one may attain in public life.

Mentorship has also become one of the defining features of his extraordinary life. Across generations, countless journalists, editors, publishers and media managers have benefited from his guidance and encouragement. He mentors not by issuing instructions but by leading through example. He follows the careers of younger colleagues, celebrates their successes and quietly offers advice whenever necessary.

His journalism career is already firmly established in Nigeria’s media history. Beginning at the Daily Times, he distinguished himself as one of the country’s finest investigative journalists before rising to become Editor and later Group Managing Director. His stories were respected because they were accurate, courageous and professionally executed. He earned the confidence of readers and the respect of colleagues through competence rather than sensationalism.

When he later ventured into politics, he carried those same values into public office. His administration as Governor of Ogun State reflected discipline, accountability and dedication to public service. Yet political success never erased his identity as a journalist. He remained proud of his professional roots and never hesitated to identify with his colleagues in the media.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors has benefited immensely from his continued involvement over the years. Successive leaderships have drawn from his wisdom and institutional memory. His interventions have often promoted unity, stability and professionalism within the Guild. Younger editors continue to see in him a model of ethical leadership, while older colleagues value his unwavering commitment to the ideals upon which the Guild was built.

In an era when public recognition sometimes breeds distance and titles create barriers, Aremo Osoba has remained refreshingly different. He has demonstrated that greatness is measured not only by the offices one occupies but also by the relationships one preserves. He has shown that humility is compatible with achievement and that leadership is ultimately about service.

For me personally, I remain deeply grateful for his friendship, encouragement and confidence over the years. His guidance strengthened my own commitment to the Guild and reinforced my belief in the enduring values of ethical journalism. Like many others across the country, I have benefited immensely from his generosity of spirit, his readiness to share experience and his unwavering faith in the future of the profession.

As Nigeria celebrates Aremo Segun Osoba at 87, we are celebrating far more than longevity. We are celebrating a lifetime devoted to journalism, public service and nation-building. We are celebrating a man whose influence extends beyond newspaper pages and political office into the lives of generations of journalists whom he has inspired and mentored.

For many of us in the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Aremo Osoba is much more than an elder statesman or a former governor. He remains, above all, a trusted colleague whose passion for journalism has never diminished. His unwavering presence at Guild activities, his readiness to mentor younger editors and his enduring commitment to the ideals of the profession have made him, in every sense, an editor who never left the Guild.

As he celebrates his 87th birthday, I join his family, friends, colleagues and countless admirers across Nigeria and beyond in thanking Almighty God for a life of uncommon accomplishment and selfless service. I pray that God grants him continued good health, strength, peace of mind and many more years of fruitful service to journalism, our country and humanity.

Happy 87th Birthday, Aremo. Your life remains an enduring testimony that while offices come and go, character, friendship and professional loyalty are the true measures of greatness.

Spain dominate Argentina to win World Cup after extra time

The 2026 World Cup final might not be remembered as a superb football match but it will at least go down in history for all that surrounded it.

There was the longest half-time in history, featuring performances from artists including Madonna and Justin Bieber, a pre-kick-off speech from Hollywood A-lister Tom Cruise, an appearance by US president Donald Trump and fireworks. Lots of fireworks - all in broad daylight.

Spain won the trophy for the second time, beating Argentina through a Ferran Torres goal in extra time but there was little else to talk about in the game itself. Plenty happened around the game though, with these some of the most memorable moments.

This World Cup was co-hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada but it has been the United States which has garnered much of the attention, particularly around comments or actions by Trump.

He previously stated that this has been a World Cup like no other - and he’s certainly not wrong about that, not least with the controversy of US striker Folarin Balogun avoiding a ban despite being sent off .

That came after Trump admitted he had spoken to Fifa president Gianni Infantino, asking him to review the sending off. The lifting of the suspension meant Balogun was able to play for the USA in the last-16 loss to Belgium.

Perhaps just as surprising was Trump’s lack of attendance at games throughout the tournament. He had not been to a single match prior to the final, meaning all eyes were on his appearance at New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.

His arrival was visible to those in the stadium as he was in one of three helicopters that flew overhead before doing a circuit of it and then landing.

He appeared to take his seat - alongside Infantino - about 20 minutes before kick-off, just in time to watch Robbie Williams and Nicole Scherzinger perform in the closing ceremony.

He was later seen in the first half being shown the trophy.

As well as Trump’s appearance, the other big talking point in the lead up to the final was the Super Bowl-style half-time show.

While the mid-game break is usually for players to recover from first-half exertion, coaches to give a team-talk and fans to buy food and drinks, this time it was extended to allow a mini-concert to take place.

There were some big names featured - Madonna, BTS, Coldplay and Shakira, whose song ‘Dai Dai’ is the official anthem of the World Cup - all starred, while there was also an appearance by Justin Bieber.

After getting a pep talk from Ted Lasso and his assistant coach Beard, Bieber changed the pace of the otherwise energetic performances with an acoustic guitar version of ‘Everything Hallelujah’.

The half-time interval lasted 27 minutes, but did it work? The reaction among fans was a bit mixed - but inside the Match of the Day studio, the assessment by former England striker Wayne Rooney was pretty blunt.

“I thought it was crap,” he said. “I thought the performances were bad. The timings were bad. Just let us play football.”

Meanwhile, the closing ceremony before the match was similar in style to many other such ceremonies with loud music, dancing on the pitch though with the addition too of a somewhat dramatic speech by actor Cruise.

For neutrals, one of the most-anticipated post-match moments centred around how visible a part Trump would play in the trophy presentation.

At the end of last year’s Club World Cup final, Trump got caught up with the Chelsea celebrations after presenting the trophy to captain Reece James.

On that occasion, having handed the main prize over, he remained on the stage for a few seconds alongside James and goalkeeper Robert Sanchez before eventually departing to the rear.

“They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage... but he wanted to stay,” said James, who was part of England’s squad for this year’s World Cup.

At the end of Sunday’s World Cup final, Trump - who had joined Infantino in handing out the medals to both the winning and losing players - did linger again for the trophy presentation, although not for quite as long as he did for the Club World Cup.

There had also been boos when Trump and Infantino emerged for the trophy ceremony while at least one player also appeared to choose not to shake Trump’s hand, with Argentina defender Cristian Romero walking straight past him after receiving his medal from Infantino.

Long queues before kick-off with heightened security

There were huge queues before the gates were opened to the public at the stadium

This was certainly a glamorous World Cup final and there was no shortage of fireworks - they went off before kick-off, during the half-time show and after Spain’s trophy lift.

But the hours beforehand will have felt anything but glamorous as heightened security meant those getting into the ground faced long queues.

With Trump attending in person, the United States secret service took over security for the game.

Gates for spectators opened at 11:00 local time - four hours before kick-off but stadium staff, performers and media had been arriving since much earlier.

Confusion over access gates had led to some members of the media being told to go to one entrance, only to be told they had to go back and start again at the queue they had been in previously.

Bag checks were also more thorough than in previous games, contributing to the length of time people waited to get in.

Despite that, congestion was eventually eased and the game kicked off without any delays.

Do nations make men or do men make nations? Two men caught my attention recently, as no doubt they would have caught the attention of many Nigerians. One is from a far flung place as India and the other is from very near to me in Nigeria. One made a very great impact on his nation, the other also made an impact, howbeit in a negative way. Both set me thinking. Who makes one another, men or nations.

One is A.P.J Abdul Kalam from India. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was an Indian aerospace engineer and statesman who served as the president of India from 2002 to 2007. Born and raised in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Kalam studied physics and aerospace engineering. Born in a humble home, Abdul Kalam was a Muslim who had to sell newspapers to support his family. But he grew to launch his country into the nuclear world and earned the praise of his president through a phone call on the day he achieved that feat: “India is proud of you.” Kalam died as he slumped while giving a lecture. Kalam also became president of what the nation called “the people’s president.” When his friends broke into his house after he died, they found four shirts, two suits, one of them mended because of a tear, and 2500 books. He had a “mended” sandal which he wears everywhere. Nothing more.

Abubakar Malami, SAN

The other is a Nigerian, Abubakar Malami a lawyer and politician who served as minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation from 2015 to 2023. Malami wants to be the next governor of Kebbi State if he wins the 2027 election. He has already filed a form for this on the platform of the African Democratic Congress, (ADC), a party put together by those who don’t want President Bola Tinubu to return to power. They have their rights, but are they better than Tinubu, as Wole Soyinka asked? Nation builders and nation killers.

Abubakar like A.P.J Kalam is a Muslim, and like Kalam again was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth, in that his father was not a business magnate and did not leave a huge inheritance for his son, Abubakar. Unlike Kalam’s father, however, Abubakar’s father was a judge in the Sharia Court of Appeal. Sharia is a tough Islamic law, and so we can assume that Abubakar grew up in an environment of rigid morality, that is if his father was practicing what he was judging in court.

Sharia is a sore point in Nigeria’s politics: the Muslim north wants it for all Muslims, and the military leaders, who are Muslims, smuggled about 170 mentions of Islam into the Constitution, unknown to the Christian and animist communities. Sharia is the reason a radical Islamist group kidnapped 46 children and their teachers into a thick forest in Oyo State for 56 days demanding its enactment.

It seems Abubakar Malami’s father saw more than what many Sharia exponents in Nigeria are seeing. He did not send his son to an Islamiyya school but rather sent him to Sokoto School of Arts and Arabic Studies, and thereafter to Uthman Dan Fodio University to read law. The Yoruba will say “aja mo omo re fun lounje, o mo omo eleomiran ge je (the dog knows how to feed his own puppy and to bite another’s puppy).

Those who insist Islamic Sharia must rule Nigeria do not send their children to study Sharia but to study common law which is acceptable and marketable all over the world. Malami went to the Nigeria Law School, Lagos after obtaining his LLB degree and joined the cream of the legal profession. Even the sky was not a limit to him. He rose from state counsel to magistrate 11 in Kebbi State, went into private practice and was later elevated to the prestigious SAN rank, the peak of legal recognition in Nigeria and through political connection with former President Muhammadu Buhari, was appointed the nation’s Attorney General.

I met two of Malami’s legal colleagues who told me, despite my protestations, that Malami’s SAN position was not as deserved. They know the law, I don’t, they know themselves, I don’t, but after serving as Attorney General in the Buhari administration, this is what Justice Joyce Obehi Abdumalik of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja ruled that Malami accumulate as “reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities.” It bears listing, so that we can truly appreciate why Nigeria has insurgency and banditry. Why we have10 to 20 million out-of-school children, why Northern Nigeria is threatening to ruin the country; they will help us understand in practical terms what greed is and how men and women who are in its grip can unmake their nations. Please bear a little.

Malami accumulated his wealth in clusters and in each cluster he had a mosque. We are thus shown the religion of Malami. His religion did not give him an inner detachment like it did Kalam who avoided greed like a plague to build a nuclear India.

Kalam met a man from another religion who loved him and taught him by the seaside. When members of the man’s religion rejected what he was doing to Kalam, the man and his wife took Kalam home and continued to feed him. Kalam through that family learned an important philosophy that religion must be used to make friends and not as a tool for fighting.

From the agreement between Justice Joyce Abdumalik and the prosecuting EFCC that Malami’s wealth was suspectedly secured by means that are not legal and must be forfeited to the state, we are compelled to think that the religion of Malami is deceitful. We thus again see how the political elites in the north and the south destroy Nigeria.

Kalam prayed five times a day - his father was an Imam, so was Malami whose father was a Sharia Appeal Court judge. But Kalam allowed his Islam to cleanse him inside and to detach him from unbridled acquisition to concentrate his energy on building an India that would be developed. At his job at the India Nuclear Research place, Kalam had no clear vision when his boss asked him. His boss told him that India must be self-reliant in space technology. This became Kalam’s philosophy, again, to which he devoted all his energy.

Not so with Malami as Justice Joyce Abdumalik pointed out and as we have seen. Malami is just 59 years old but has accumulated what no man should in a lifetime, what the Court says was gotten by dishonest means. Malami, through a statement released by his media aide who announced an office of the former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, forgetting that that office terminated effectively when Buhari’s tenure expired. Malami said he will appeal but conscientious Nigerians must pray that Malami’s appeal will meet another judge as truthful and fiery as Justice Joyce Abdumalik. That is the only way Nigeria can be delivered from nation destroyers.

Nigeria needs as many Kalam’s as possible, and they are available. Kalam believes that the dreams of India sit in India schools, therefore he gave himself the tasks of inspiring 100,000 students yearly. India which used to be poor is rising; it is the fifth largest economy in the world giving China an aggressive chase.

From the next election, Nigerians must look for Kalams who have vision and are not greedy to lead them. It is possible because the dream of Nigerians are in the classrooms, not the forests where greedy leaders keep herders who they have radicalized to kidnap Nigerians and use them as negotiating means to Islamize the country. May the new Nigeria rise.

Senegal’s President, Bassirou Faye, has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, succeeding Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio.

Faye emerged as the new chairman during the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States in Sierra Leone on Sunday.

The Senegalese president succeeds his Sierra Leonean counterpart and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority, Julius Maada Bio.

Bio had emerged as the new Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government when President Bola Tinubu’s two-term leadership of the bloc came to an end in June, 2025.

Tinubu handed over the mantle of leadership to President Bio at the 67th Ordinary Session of the Authority held in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja.

He succeeds Bio at a particularly challenging period for ECOWAS, with security threats, democratic setbacks, and the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger still dominating the regional agenda.

As the new chairman, he is expected to intensify efforts to rebuild trust and keep communication channels open with the three breakaway countries.

Aged 46, Faye represents a younger generation of African leaders.

His leadership could inject new momentum into ECOWAS’ reform agenda, especially on governance, accountability, youth inclusion and institutional credibility.

His position places Senegal at the centre of major regional diplomatic and political decisions.

Also at the meeting, Biram Diop was appointed President of the ECOWAS Commission, taking over from Dr Omar Touray.

We live in an impressionable world, even though literacy has continued to improve the world over – Nigeria inclusive. One of the downsides of social media is the velocity of information being pushed at everyone – information and data that no mind can fully process. Coupled with this velocity is also the fact that most people don’t want to even try to interrogate what they hear and see on all these media; people just accept as true, so long as the information fits their sentiments. Very few interrogate or subject information to careful veracity tests. Most times, we just rush to share rather than ruminate over whether new information is true. With social media, dogmatism (the art of adopting someone else’s belief) has increased, paradoxically as the world got ‘smarter’. Nigerians top the global chart (according to the World Economic Forum) in terms of the average time that citizens spend on social media. And that is something. AI puts us at fourth position after Kenya, Brazil and South Africa. In each of these countries, people spend just below 4 hours everyday on social media. Nigeria happens to control the most population in Africa, and just about the same population as Brazil which is a middle-income country. Plot the graph, and Nigeria is a social media time bomb!

This social media penetration in Nigeria is a phenomenon that should be carefully managed because it shows just how easy it is to penetrate the minds of our people – for good or ill. It just so happens that for now, the purveyors of pessimism, hopelessness, despair and doom happen to have secured the upper hand. They said no news is good news. Good news is boring. Bad news sells. And psychologically, with our current state of social psychology, millions of Nigerians are wired to seek negative news about their country, and about others, and to believe such news and spread it on the spur. It is also agreed that Nigerians are exceptionalists – we often go around bragging about how great we are as human beings, as ethnic groups, and as a nation. Humility is not one of our fortes. But this also spills over to the other side. When we start to complain about our country, we speak in superlative, nihilistic, and fatalistic terms – Nigeria is dead! Nigeria is finished! There is no hope for this country! And on and on. Even those whose livelihood is established on ruining the country, her image, her resources, are often the most strident in condemning the country and writing off any chances of us escaping Armageddon. Nigerians often speak as if history itself originated here. Like Americans, we have been developing a certain tunnel vision that focuses us only on ourselves. Tell us to take a pause, contextualise and compare carefully with other nations, or carefully examine history, and many just flip into a rage. This is the reason why I strive daily to contribute my quota in pushing back as much as possible, especially as it pertains to the Nigerian economy.

This week, two recent events need to be explained with a view to disabusing the minds of millions of Nigerians who had imbibed the untruths. The first is a criticism of President Tinubu’s stated ambition to achieve a $1 trillion Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for Nigeria by the year 2030. Mr Mustapha Chike Obi, a well-respected financial expert and pioneer MD of the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) had made a statement three years ago doubting the possibility of the current administration being able to achieve that feat. The video went viral for some reason, with opponents of the government making a feast of it.

My quick response to that statement is that the idea behind setting targets is to be able to strive for greater heights. They say when we aim for the skies, we may find ourselves among the stars. So, if Nigeria aims for $1 trillion and clocks in at $750 billion or $800 billion by the year 2030, I reckon that that will already be a pass mark and quite remarkable. Perhaps more poignantly is to note that Nigeria’s GDP is currently close to N500 trillion in Naira terms. The recent IMF Article IV report has it that our GDP will be at N530 trillion by the end of this year and will grow to N580 trillion by 2027. I believe it will be more than this. This means that if exchange rates were left at the Buhari-era rate of N490=$1, Nigeria’s GDP in US Dollar terms would be $1.08 trillion by the end of this year, even though the target is for 2030. Naysayer should note this.

Now, we have explained why the Naira had to depreciate through the deployment of market forces in 2023 and 2024. The 70%-80% arbitrage that existed between official and unofficial rates has now totally disappeared, and users of foreign exchange sometimes find it cheaper to buy in unofficial channels these days. The weaker Naira has also brought in some advantages in discouraging importation and encouraging exports of primary and secondary products, thereby placing the Nigerian economy on a more solid footing. So, the Central Bank of Nigeria is not in a hurry to make the Naira stronger – only to encourage more importation and return pressure on the currency. As things stand, all demands for the dollar are being met, and reserves are surging. The IMF Report also stated that the Naira is now undervalued and should trade at around N1,147=$1. This is the first time in a long time that the IMF Group will hint Nigeria that our currency is overvalued. For many years, we only heard the devaluation din. Foreign Reserves, which sit at $52 billion today (we already exceeded the target for the year), are predicted to close at $58 billion by the end of 2026 by the same IMF.

This means that at some point in the future, the Naira may strengthen. Imagine that the Naira strengthens today to say N1,000, our GDP will immediately hit $500 billion and return to being the largest in Africa. If we continue along the current trajectory of economic growth, and the Naira appreciates somewhere down the road, then we can at least get near the $1 trillion mark. It should also be noted that what really matters to us in Nigeria is Naira, and not dollars. Whereas a nation requires foreign exchange for many important procurements, but the vast majority of our transactions are increasingly done in the Naira. This is even more imperative as Mr. President continues to push for local government autonomy. At the local government level, the Naira matters more and goes further. The Purchasing Power Parity concept ensures this because a dollar goes ten times further in Nigeria than it does in the US. Given this fact, we should compare ourselves less with USA or any other OECD country. The focus, really, should be on how fast we can grow our Naira GDP, in a manner that ensures more inclusivity and better equality of income. At current growth rates, in compounded fashion, we can hit N700 trillion by 2030, and if GDP growth rates pick up as we hope, this can be much better. We are almost there. And in this pursuit, we are most likely to reemerge as the largest economy in Africa, beating Egypt and South Africa (a country where the people have currently undone their economy with their ill-advised xenophobia) for the top spot.

The other dramatic event was when TV anchor Oseni Rufai wept on his show. Whereas it is still a puzzle to me that news anchors in Nigeria now use prime time to air their own personal opinions (maybe a Nigerian invention as I haven’t seen that done elsewhere), Rufai did put up a good show. But there was a flaw.

My friend Rufai was discussing the fact that in the heady days of the oil boom in 1974, Nigeria lent $240 million to the World Bank and $120 million to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Nigeria had a temporary boom then, and that was expressed when the then Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Clement Isong, stated to the Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, that money was not Nigeria’s problem but how to spend it. This was a valid statement given the turn of events. Nigeria had little intellectual depth then to understand what to do with the sudden burst of dollar liquidity. Our GDP in 1960 was a mere $4 billion, which has now grown a hundredfold to $400 billion today. Nigeria had just a few thousand university graduates in 1960, and the number had grown to maybe tens of thousands in 1974, and to tens of millions today. So, in 1974, we were out of our depth with the idea of planning for such money. And the World Bank/IMF stepped in and relieved us of the money. If Rufai wanted to shed a tear, he should for the ‘chancing’ of Nigeria by these multilaterals at that point. Of course, less than a decade after that event, we were running back to them because commodity prices – including crude oil – had crashed. Let’s call it a learning curve, but some economists have written that the crash in crude oil prices was orchestrated by powerful western countries as revenge for the OPEC gang-up. It was geopolitics and war by other means.

The real reason to shed tears was that we didn’t use the 1970s oil boom money for even more extensive infrastructure, even though we had quite a bit of that done. Nigeria has just emerged from two bloody coups and a civil war. I think we could put it down to the Nigerian economy not having the capacity to absorb such liquidity. Gowon and his team must have struggled to deal with it. On one hand, they had a cement armada because Nigeria ordered 16 million metric tonnes of cement to build military barracks, and we ended up with 400 ships choking Apapa ports with huge demurrage costs to boot. On the other hand, we still had too much liquidity, and had to pay the Udoji Awards to civil servants by January 1975, creating inflation and whatnot. This was a temporary, commodity-price-linked liquidity. Rufai should not confuse the public that Nigeria had arrived in 1974. We had a firmament of infrastructure to build. And our population was still rural and mostly uneducated. But I agree with his anguish at the deluge of properties forfeited by Abubakar Malami – especially if those properties are traced to corruption. But these are different issues entirely.

What is more? In comparing the excess liquidity issues of 1974 to the debts of today, we should understand that nations are a lot wiser now. We should also constantly learn from the best. In 1974, as in today, we are still writing our own histories in real time. Dynamism is involved in national development. I wrote an article on this page some weeks back titled “Nigeria is Not Overborrowed but Underfinanced”, in which I noted the critical reality that Africa as a whole holds a mere 1.8% of global debt. This is the kind of thing that should concern great minds, beyond hysteria and loud wailing. Our people say that when we weep, we should still be able to see clearly. Why is the whole of Africa holding the debt of Australia, and mere fractions of what the UK, France and other countries owe? Why did these powerful nations grant themselves such proportions of global debt and then leave Africa in the lurch? Why does Nigeria have a debt-to-GDP ratio of 38%, which is much lower than many of her contemporaries (South Africa, Egypt, Kenya, Brazil, etc), and we are wailing about too much debt? Have we noticed that Nigeria is doing much better in the revenue area? Do we have the infrastructure to finance? Is finance important? Should we use short-term revenue to build long-term infrastructure, resulting in a mismatch and abandoned projects? Have we not become smart enough to be able to create structures where public and private sector collaboration can guarantee performance and eradicate corruption in the main? Do we really seek development, or do we wish to remain in the dark past? Are we ready? These are the questions to ask ourselves on this matter. Whatever our answers are will dictate the next step.

I wish to advise my friend Rufai – who knows better and whom I’ve known for at least ten years – to impute less emotion into his daily interventions and to depress our people less. His platform is too strategic for drama. Nigeria has totally transformed since 1974 and is progressing daily. Many Nigerians are taking advantage of our daily evolution, and what they need is direction, encouragement, and hope. The daily deluge of a potpourri of toxic pessimism, dooms-baiting, and negativity bias is not doing Nigeria any favours in the long run. It just damages our image and closes many doors against the nation and its businessmen. It slows our progress and renders every Nigerian a suspect and the nation a pariah! It also pays. Yes, it turns out to be good cash for the media boys, many of whom have set up channels through which they get paid more dollars for doing constant damage to this country. They sometimes convince themselves, though, that they are only doing their jobs. Without mentioning names, I doubt if these guys are interested in a better Nigeria, because if Nigeria really gets better, this news format disappears, and so will the money. Or maybe these guys do these things to get the attention of powerful men and to get paid. Whichever way, the people who should help Nigeria to seize any escape route out of structural underdevelopment are the same ones – wittingly or unwittingly – ensuring that we all stay stuck, with a battered image, confusion, less hope in our future and enraged children. Good for them. Bad for Nigeria. Something must shift.

Spain dominate Argentina to win World Cup after extra time

Describing a result as a ‘victory for football’ might seem like a trite cliche - but you won’t find many neutrals disagreeing with that description of Spain’s win in the 2026 World Cup final.

When Ferran Torres slammed in the extra-time winner, and Rodri lifted the trophy high in New Jersey, it is hard to imagine many will have had sympathy for Argentina.

Spain triumphed in a battle of endurance, for players and spectators, to beat the Argentines and win their second men’s World Cup.

On every football metric - and, some would say, morality too - this was the right result.

“There is no doubt that the right team won,” former England captain Alan Shearer said on BBC One. “From start to finish, Spain controlled possession. They were the ones looking to play football, create chances and get in behind.

“This is a result for football because of the way that they have played. Spain deserve it.”

Spain had 65% possession, an expected goals tally of 1.94 and 20 shots on goal - 11 on target.

At the other end, goalkeeper Unai Simon kept his seventh clean sheet in eight matches as he won the Golden Glove for the tournament’s best goalkeeper.

Spain conceded just one goal at the 2026 World Cup - the fewest conceded by any winning team.

Ferran Torres finally gives Spain a lead against Argentina

Spain are - even in the hard-to-quantify world of international football - clearly the preeminent side in the world.

They are world, Olympic and European champions - not to mention women’s world champions too. The men are now unbeaten in their past 38 matches in all competitions - the longest run by any European team in history.

They stumbled out of the gates in this World Cup with a 0-0 draw against Cape Verde - meaning that on both occasions Spain have won the world title they have failed to win their opener, after a 1-0 loss to Switzerland in 2010.

There have only been three instances on record of a player completing 100 or more passes in a World Cup final. Two of those were Spain players on Sunday - Rodri with 101, and Pau Cubarsi with 121.

And for many of the squad, this might just be the start.

Cubarsi, 19, was named young player of the tournament, while it seems very likely his Barcelona team-mate Lamine Yamal has his best years ahead.

At 19 years and six days, Lamine Yamal became the third-youngest player to play in a World Cup final, after Pele in 1958 and Giuseppe Bergomi in 1982. He is now the third-youngest winner.

Argentina fail to spoil Spain’s party

Argentina are so often painted as the pantomime villains of international football - particularly by England fans.

As they did in the semi-final against the Three Lions, they appeared in the first half to be more interested in stopping any semblance of football occurring than playing the game themselves.

Leandro Paredes was the spoiler in chief, with Enzo Fernandez his deputy.

Though four Argentina players were booked, many will feel that adds further to the theory they have had lenient treatment from officials at this tournament.

Argentina made a total of 464 passes, compared to Spain’s 852.

But, unlike England, Spain did not wilt in the second half. Had they won this game long before Torres’ 106th-minute strike there could have been few complaints.

Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez had to make 11 saves - the most by any goalkeeper on record in a World Cup final.

At the other end, meanwhile, the defending champions became the first team in World Cup history not to have a shot in 90 minutes of a final. Their first attempt came via Lionel Messi in the 117th minute.

Argentina lost their crown, and the scenes that followed the final whistle led many to feel they had lost their dignity too.

Fernandez was first shown a yellow card for dissent, then a second for a spectacularly late challenge that sent Cubarsi somersaulting.

After the full-time whistle, Paredes was involved in scraps with Rodri, Gavi and Borja Iglesias and team mate Nahuel Molina was seen throwing a punch at a passing Spain player too.

“Embarrassing, seeing that sort of stuff after the game has been played,” said BBC pundit Wayne Rooney. “Someone has been crowned World Cup champions. It is not good enough.

“Paredes is better than that. It doesn’t stop there. He keeps going and going.”

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni attempted to defend his side’s performance through floods of tears at his post-match media conference, but could only admit the best team had won.

“Even though they were out-playing us until the 85th minute, I would love to know what would have happened had we still had 11 men on the pitch,” he said of Fernandez’s dismissal.

“We managed to go all the way to the end when the match was so open and it just couldn’t be. They deserved the victory, that is the reality.”

Argentina might have taken the World Cup final to extra time - the fifth of the past six to go that far - but that could not mask their inferiority.

“Argentina can have absolutely no complaints about what happened,” former England goalkeeper Joe Hart told BBC One. “Disgusting behaviour.

“I don’t think Rodri needed to get in their faces but you understand that after 120 minutes where you have been wound up and you thought you’ve been wronged, and the referee has been on your back.”

Kylian Mbappe has become the first player to win the World Cup Golden Boot twice after earning the award for top scorer at the 2026 tournament.

The France forward netted 10 goals in eight games to edge out Lionel Messi in a high-quality race.

Having struck eight times to finish top scorer at Qatar 2022, Mbappe has won the Golden Boot in back-to-back World Cups.

The 27-year-old was the first man to reach double figures for World Cup goals since Gerd Muller for West Germany in 1970.

Only Just Fontaine, who hit 13 for France in 1958, and Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis with 11 in 1954, have scored more individual goals in a single tournament.

Mbappe is also the men’s World Cup all-time top scorer with 22 goals - one ahead of Messi.

He moved clear of the Argentine on Saturday with two goals in the bronze match, although he could not stop France falling to a 6-4 defeat against England and finishing fourth.

Mbappe also scored twice against Senegal and Iraq in the group stage, as well as Sweden in the last 32.

He followed that with strikes against Paraguay in the last 16 - the 70th-minute winner from the penalty spot - and against Morocco in the quarter-finals.

Messi could have overtaken the Real Madrid forward with a hat-trick in the World Cup final on Sunday.

However, the 39-year-old could not find the net in New Jersey as his Argentina side were beaten 1-0 by Spain, and ended the competition with eight goals in as many matches.

England’s Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland of Norway scored seven times, while France forward Ousmane Dembele and English captain Harry Kane followed them in the list with six.

Golden Glove - Unai Simon (Spain)

Spain’s Unai Simon claimed the Golden Glove award for best goalkeeper after conceding just once in eight games.

The Athletic Club stopper kept seven clean sheets and was only beaten by Belgium‘s Charles de Ketelaere in the quarter-final tie.

The 29-year-old was picked ahead of Arsenal‘s Premier League title winner David Raya as Spain’s number one, and repaid manager Luis de la Fuente’s faith with a series of solid performances as they were crowned champions.

Ferran Torres scored an extra-time winner as Spain defeated holders Argentina 1-0 to win the World Cup on Sunday and shatter Lionel Messi’s dreams of a triumphant farewell to football’s greatest stage.

Barcelona striker Torres lashed home a thumping finish in the 106th minute to reward a dominant display by Spain against an Argentina team who failed to register a single shot on target in 120 minutes.

A star-studded crowd of 80,663 that included US President Donald Trump packed East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium to see if Argentina captain Messi could crown his glittering career with a second World Cup victory.

But the 39-year-old maestro — almost certainly playing in his final World Cup game — was reduced to irrelevance as Spain took control early on against an Argentina team who committed a catalogue of cynical fouls throughout.

The South Americans’ skullduggery ended with midfielder Enzo Fernandez being sent off after a brutal challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi in injury time.

For long periods though it looked as if Argentina may somehow hold on for a penalty shoot-out as Spain struggled to make the breakthrough.

But after Nico Williams had a goal controversially disallowed in extra-time, Spain struck.

A lofted cross to the back post by Pedro Porro found Williams who nodded into the path of Torres to crash home the goal that would clinch Spain’s second World Cup title after their maiden 2010 triumph.

Earlier, a clear sign of Argentina’s frustration came in the 15th minute when Alexis Mac Allister went flying in with a studs-up challenge that struck Dani Olmo’s ankle.

Mac Allister escaped an early yellow card although after Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic only awarded a foul.

Spain made their presence felt moments later though, with Alex Baena poleaxing Messi with an elbow to the back that again escaped sanction.

Argentina continued to test referee Vincic’s patience with a series of niggly challenges, and Nicolas Tagliafico was lucky not to be cautioned after raking Lamine Yamal’s calf in a clumsy challenge.

Lopsided half

Spain meanwhile continued to probe for openings but Mikel Oyarzabal failed to seriously test Emi Martinez with a low shot that the Argentina goalkeeper gathered easily in the 39th minute.

Eventually though Vincic did reach for a yellow card, with Lisandro Martinez booked for a cynical challenge on Oyarzabal.

Martinez was substituted shortly afterwards with an apparent injury, veteran Nicolas Otamendi coming on in his place.

The final’s controversial extended half-time show featuring the likes of Madonna, Shakira and Justin Bieber stretched to 27 minutes but did little to upset Spain’s rhythm.

The Spanish piled on the pressure in a lopsided second half as Argentina hung on grimly.

Spain coach de la Fuente sent on Pedri and Ferran Torres for Fabian Ruiz and Oyarzabal and the chances continued with Argentina in full siege mode.

Yamal twisted away and chipped a cross for Torres, whose downward header was saved by Martinez.

Pedri and Cubarsi both lashed long-range shots that Martinez failed to grasp at the first attempt but somehow Argentina continued to hold on.

But the arrival of substitutes Williams and Mikel Merino gave fresh life to Spain’s attacking momentum, and the onslaught continued.

Fernandez was booked for dissent in the 82nd minute before Torres and Rodri both fired long-range shots from Martinez.

Fernandez’s dismissal left Spain down to 10 men heading into extra-time.

Martinez had one last save deep in stoppage time when Yamal’s superb whipped free-kick was clawed wide.

The Spanish dominance continued in extra-time, with Williams almost opening the scoring with a glancing header that Martinez got down well to save one-handed.

Moments later it looked as if Spain had made the breakthrough when Williams slid a low finish into the net but referee Vincic blew for a marginal foul on Nicolas Otamendi.

But the breakthrough came with Torres’s winner on 106 minutes. Argentina made a desperate last raid on Spain’s goal but La Roja held firm to seal victory.
