Barely 24 hours after the Rivers State House of Assembly issued an ultimatum for Governor Siminalayi Fubara to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill or face impeachment, a viral video has surfaced online showing a group, the Niger Delta Rescue Movement, threatening to destroy oil facilities if the moves proceed.
The group frowned at the Supreme Court ruling that halted Rivers State’s monthly allocation from the federation account, claiming its agitation is for governance stability.
In the video, it warned: “The people of Rivers State need progress and a conducive environment for governance. We will not sit idle while our state is drawn into turmoil. If the Federal Allocation due to Rivers State is not released promptly, we have no choice but to take action.”
This development follows a March 4 warning by the National President of the Ijaw National Coongress, who cautioned that attempts to impeach Governor Fubara could compromise the security of oil facilities in the region.
Leader Distances Self
However, the National Leader of the Simplicity Movement, Sobomabo Jackrich, has distanced himself, the National Rescue Movement (NRM), Tantita Security, and the defunct Niger Delta Liberation Force (NDLF) from the viral video.
The National Leader of the Simplicity Movement, Sobomabo Jackrich.
Speaking at a media briefing in Port Harcourt, Jackrich who is the leader of National Rescue Movement Party in Rivers State, stated that neither he nor any organization under his leadership had any links with the group.
He expressed concern that the group’s name bears a resemblance to his political party, NRM, emphasizing that “NRM remains a law-abiding political party committed to democratic principles and peaceful engagement”.
Jackrich also refuted any association between Tantita Security and the group, clarifying that the security outfit under his watch is solely focused on safeguarding oil installations and waterways.
He alleged that the video could be part of a plot to frame him and other leaders backing Governor Fubara, stating, “This aligns with the alarm I raised yesterday about certain individuals hellbent on linking me to criminal activities to remove us from circulation before the upcoming local government elections.”
Recalling a similar experience on April 8, 2024, when his residence was raided by the military, resulting in destruction and loss of lives, he said no incriminating evidence was found against him.
Reaffirming his right to support Governor Fubara, Jackrich called on security agencies to resist being manipulated, urging Rivers people to remain peaceful and steadfast, saying, “Truth and justice will prevail.”
