Now more than ever, the workplace is an unpredictable place. You can happily swing into work today and by the next, you are jobless.
Now more than ever, the workplace is an unpredictable place. You can happily swing into work today and by the next, you are jobless. To add to that, the corporate world is changing at a dizzying pace and both employees and employers are left playing catch-up.
Job Trends 2023: What To Expect© [CDATA[ Provided by YAZA
This is not going to stop any time soon which means that these dynamics will only escalate come 2023. As we keep adjusting to the growing demands, it is important to know the trends so as not to get caught flat-footed.
Here are a few job trends for 2023.
Flexibility
The coronavirus pandemic completely changed the approach to work. Previously, many thought that they had to be in an office somewhere in order to be productive. Since the work-from-home mandate came into force, many people realised they do not need the office to be productive. In fact, many organisations are finding it hard to get employees back to the offices as many opt to continue working from home.
The Gig Economy
With the unpredictability of the job market today, you can hardly rely on one source of income hence the gig economy. Employers should not be surprised to find out that their employees are doubling up and neither should they penalise them for it. It is a necessity as most people look for security.
A report by Mercy Cops shows that the gig economy is valued at $109 million and will grow to $345 million, an indication that more and more people, particularly college graduates, flock into this market.
What job seekers and office workers can expect in 2023
Keep Embracing Virtual Meetings
We have more than enough of these. Whilst it’s made working beyond geographical locations possible, yours truly still prefers physical, in-person meetings. Anyways, expect more of these in the coming years. This goes for job seekers as well as those employed.
If you are job hunting, you should try a demo virtual call to ensure you know how to navigate your way around multiple platforms. Know how to make a presentation, how to angle your laptop and have good sound. These things might seem trivial but when we are under pressure, they tend to appear complex so figure it all out in advance.
More Talk About Mental Health
In recent times, we’ve heard stories of employees who’ve spoken about their mental health and how their working environment has contributed to its deterioration. As this conversation gathers pace, human resources and managers should expect a call or meeting addressing such.
Quiet Quitting
Although I do not advocate for this at all - because there are better ways to handle workplace dissatisfaction, quiet quitting is something that might just continue. In fact, some argue that quiet quitting is a phenomenon that employees have practised over the years, the difference is that it got a cooler label.
Millennials and Generation Z are causing a significant shift by being vocal and not nodding along to demands they feel are unrealistic. They basically want to do only the job they’ve been hired to do.
Work-Life Balance
This is not new. Everyone wants and longs for a healthy dynamic between their work and personal lives. Now more than ever, people are actively pursuing this and are not shy about it.
Things like not replying to emails after work hours, having separate work and personal phones, having separate social media profiles and taking on work that doesn’t minimise the amount of time you spend with family are some of the things people are now doing to achieve this very thin line between work and life.
We hope that these six trends will be helpful in your career, whether you are already in the workforce or are moving into it.
