Welcome to the Metro newsletter. Metro is a mix of news, views and commentary. Indeed today marks a momentous occasion in my journey of journalism. It's been a rollercoaster ride through the momentous history that has shaped the course of events in our dear nation. I have been a witness to history. And it's been more than three decades in the media. However, over the years a lot of water has passed under the bridge, so to speak. Now, the traditional media is in a life struggle for relevance, engagement and dominance due to the advent of social media which has almost supplanted the former to the backstage in the contemporary media ecosystem. Because of this, the traditional media is currently undergoing a metamorphoses to keep abreast of the modern trends in social media, and to renegotiate it's relevance in the scheme of things. Social media has an edge in the sense that it has the advantages of speed, reach and immediacy. It virtually operates at the speed of light, as it were. The old and the new media can be likened to the email and snail mail. Or even the locomotive engine and the steam engine. In short, social media has been both a distruptive force and a force for both good and change. It has reset the model of journalism, birthing several online newspapers. At the same time, quite a number of traditional newspapers have bitten the dust. But that’s not to say the traditional media is on the verge of rapid obsolescence. The traditional media still manages to keep it's head above water. Still, in a way, social media is now an open source of news, views and reports. What’s more an observer has described social media as a weapon of mass connection.
Thus it has broken the monopoly of the traditional media, and the gatekeepers who control all the content that was hitherto served the public. In some ways, social media is akin to the village square where events are shaped and choreographed. In light of this development in the media landscape, Metro has joined the gravy train, taking advantage of new technology to present its own agenda. The agenda is none other than the passion for our beloved nation. Basically, a Nigeria built on equity and justice, where no one is oppressed and everyone feels a sense of belonging and fealty to the motherland. Plus advocacy for the rule of law and good governance. That's the Nigeria of our dreams. And we believe that together we can build the Nigeria of our dreams.
