Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili made history on Saturday, shattering the world record in the women’s 150 metres at the 2025 Adidas Atlanta City Games with a blistering 15.85 seconds (2.0m/s) at Piedmont Park.
At just 22 years old, Ofili became the first woman ever to run the rarely contested 150m in under 16 seconds, eclipsing the previous record of 16.23 seconds set by Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas in 2018.
Unchallenged throughout the race, Ofili surged ahead of the field, with American Tamari Davis finishing second in 16.14s and Jamaican Ashanti Moore placing third in 16.50s.
Her landmark performance was the standout moment of the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meet and signals her growing dominance on the international stage.
Ofili’s record-breaking feat headlined a strong showing for Team Nigeria at the high-profile street meet, which featured world-class athletes competing in a fan-friendly, open-air setting.
Also in action was world 100m hurdles record holder Tobi Amusan, who clocked 12.53 seconds to finish second in her heat behind American Keni Harrison (12.44s), advancing to the final later in the day. Amusan, who recently ran 12.74s and 12.66s in Xiamen and Keqiao, respectively, continues to build momentum ahead of the summer championships.
In the men’s 100m, Nigerian sprinter Udodi Onwuzurike posted a season’s best of 10.20 seconds in his heat, finishing second behind South Africa’s Akani Simbine (10.13s).
The time was enough to secure Onwuzurike a place in the final and marked a promising resurgence in his 2025 campaign.
With Ofili’s world record grabbing global headlines and other Nigerian athletes showing strong form, the Adidas Atlanta City Games proved a memorable outing for the West African nation.
