NEW YORK, May 29 (AGCNewsNet) – United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has commended the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on its 50th anniversary, hailing the bloc’s achievements in regional integration, peace, and security, while urging a renewed commitment to democratic governance and cooperation amid mounting regional challenges.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Guterres recognised ECOWAS as "a pillar of regional integration on the African continent" and praised its "crucial role in conflict prevention, electoral assistance, and regional responses to unconstitutional changes of government."
“The Secretary-General commends ECOWAS’ achievements and calls for strengthened collective efforts to consolidate peace, democracy and sustainable development,” the statement read.
The message comes as the West African bloc grapples with growing instability, including recent military takeovers in member states such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. In January, these three nations announced their intent to withdraw from ECOWAS, raising concerns about the future of regional unity.
Guterres emphasised the UN’s continued partnership with the bloc, pledging support for ECOWAS initiatives in peacebuilding, constitutional order, and sustainable development.
“The United Nations remains a close and steadfast partner of ECOWAS,” the statement added.
Formed in 1975, ECOWAS comprises 15 West African nations, though recent political upheavals have tested its influence and cohesion. The bloc has historically played a key role in regional peacekeeping missions, mediation efforts, and economic integration.
Guterres encouraged ECOWAS leaders to “renew their commitment to the aspirations of the ECOWAS founding fathers and the ideals of regional solidarity,” particularly in an era of shifting political landscapes.
The Secretary-General’s remarks come ahead of planned celebrations across the region to mark ECOWAS' golden jubilee, with observers noting that the anniversary offers a pivotal opportunity for reflection and redirection.
“We urge ECOWAS to continue advancing democratic governance, inclusive development, and cooperation for the benefit of the people of West Africa,” the statement concluded.
