US Professor Accidentally Shot Dead by Security Guard in Osun
Police Arrest Osun Prince Over Killing Of US Prof As Gov Adeleke Orders Probe.

A United States Professor and politician, Richard Adeoriokin, has been accidentally shot dead by a local security guard in Ejigbo, Osun State.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. last Saturday.
According to report, it was in the aftermath of a public function on Inisha Road of Ejigbo, which was attended by Professor Adeoriokin, his political associates, and Oyeyode Oyesosin, the son of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo. wIt was learnt that after the event at the king’s residence, Oyeyode Oyesosin invited his friends to his house for a brief meeting.
As the guests prepared to leave, he ordered the security guard to fire gunshots into the air as a farewell gesture.
Tragically, one of the security guard’s guns was mistakenly aimed downward, and the bullet struck Professor Adeoriokin in the leg.
Despite efforts to save him, he bled to death at the Baptist Hospital in Ejigbo.
Afeez Lawal, the professor’s personal assistant, who witnessed the incident, said his boss was a lecturer at Prairie View A&M University in Houston, Texas,the United States, and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The professor had attended a ceremony where the state Governor, Ademola Adeleke, was conferred with a chieftaincy title earlier that day.
The remains of Professor Adeoriokin have been deposited in the Osun State University Teaching Hospital morgue.
Governor Adeleke has ordered a thorough investigation into the killing of Adeoriokin and the subsequent killing of the security guard.
He also instructed the state Police Command to issue guidelines on the use of local guns to enhance citizen safety, especially at public functions.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC), through its state Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, expressed condolences over the tragic incident, and urged the police authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

The Osun State Police Command has reacted to the fatal shooting incident, which occurred in Ejigbo town, leading to the death of a United States-based Prof. Richard Idowu (Ade Ori Okin), saying one person has been arrested in connection to the incident.
A statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Yemisi Opalola, on Sunday, stated that one Prince Eniola Oyeyode of Ejigbo town of Osun State has been arrested over the incident.
LEADERSHIP gathered that Prince Eniola was a friend of the deceased and that the late Prof. Idowu was at the 50th coronation anniversary of his friend’s father – the Ogiyan of Ejigbo – on Saturday before the incident.
Opalola said, “The incident occurred on 27/1/2024 at about 9:48pm after the 50th Coronation Anniversary of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Oyeyode Oyesosin where one Prince Eniola Oyeyode ‘m’ of Ejigbo Instructed one of his civilian guards named Hammed Abdul Jelili ‘m’ of Ejigbo to fire his double barrel gun into the air to confirm if the gun is in good condition or not, but instead shot directly at the victim and he was rushed to a hospital but confirmed dead by the Doctor.
“Meanwhile, the Prince Eniola Oyeyode who gave the order to his civilian guard to fire the gun has been arrested and detained.”
The PPRO added that the State’s Commissioner of Police, CP Bzigu Dali Kwazhi, appealed to members of the public, especially the residents of Ejigbo town to remain calm as discreet investigation had commenced immediately.
